Google Co-Founder Supports Two Different Candidates in California Gubernatorial Succession Race

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has made significant financial contributions to two competing candidates who are positioning themselves for California’s future gubernatorial race when current Governor Gavin Newsom’s term concludes.

The tech billionaire has demonstrated his political engagement by donating substantial amounts to candidates from both major political parties. Brin provided $39,200 to Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate who serves as a Fox News contributor. Additionally, he made a much larger contribution of $1 million to support Matt Mahan, who represents the Democratic party.

This dual-party approach to political donations reflects an unusual strategy, as most major donors typically align their contributions with candidates from a single political party. The significant disparity in donation amounts between the two candidates is particularly noteworthy, with Mahan receiving approximately 25 times more funding than Hilton.

Both recipients of Brin’s contributions are among the early contenders preparing for what is expected to be a competitive race to lead California when the current governor’s tenure ends. The donations highlight the early mobilization of campaign resources and donor support in advance of the formal campaign period.
